Rumour claims Windows Phone more popular than iPhone in China
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 22 May 2012, 2:02 am CEST
Microsoft claims that its Windows Phone operating system running
on phones such as the Nokia Lumia 800
and HTC Titan has
overtaken the iOS running on handsets such as the iPhone 4S in
terms of marketshare in China, in just two months after the
software giant’s mobile platform was released. According to Emerce,
an online business magazine, Windows Phone accounts for 7% of the
Chinese market, while the iPhone trails behind at 6%. These figures
were announced by the Greater China COO at Microsoft, Michel van
der Bel.
We’re not sure how Microsoft has come up with these figures. So treat this claim as a rumour as of now.
Although Microsoft’s claims may seem doubtful, it is possible. After all, the big M has managed to sell its handsets via China Mobile, which is China’s largest provider accounting for 67% of the country’s market. Apple is yet to sell its devices through the network.
Do you agree with Microsoft when it claims its Windows Phone has overtaken the iPhone? Give us your thoughts.
RIM, Motorola, and Nokia submit a new nano SIM design to try and meet a consensus with Apple
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 22 May 2012, 1:28 am CEST
Back in March, RIM, Motorola, and Nokia have fought against
Apple, who is trying to standardise their nano SIM card design with
the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Now, the
trio has submitted a new design to try and meet a consensus with
the Cupertino firm.
The design the trio has submitted integrates 80% of Apple’s original design. The remaining 20% is what RIM, Motorola, and Nokia want to include in the nano SIM standard.
What the trio is proposing seems fair. However, the Cupertino firm is known for doing things differently compared to everyone else. This means that Apple may not agree to what the trio has proposed. Oh well, back to the drawing board then.
Normally, ETSI votes whether to standardise a proposed design or not. In this case, ETSI stated that it would rather make the companies in question come to a “broad industry consensus”.
What do you make of this nano SIM debacle between Apple and the trio consisting of RIM, Motorola, and Nokia? Are you sick and tired of cutting your SIM card to the size of micro SIMs used on devices such as the iPhone 4S and the Lumia 800, or are you for making SIMs even smaller? Give us your thoughts.
Leaked Samsung Galaxy S3 ROM now available for download
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 22 May 2012, 12:56 am CEST

S3 ROM, which includes Android 4.0.4 (the version of Ice Cream
Sandwich running on the new flagship) and the latest version of the
Korean firm’s TouchWiz UI, can now be downloaded and installed on

Aside from Ice Cream Sandwich, the ROM includes S-voice. This is Samsung’s version of Apple’s Siri, which is exclusive to the iPhone 4S. It also includes Pop Up and Play. This feature allows you to watch videos while doing other tasks.
The leaked ROM can be downloaded from XDA Developers. However, the ROM can only be installed if your phone is rooted. Also take note that the file size is 768MB, which means that you’ll need a lot of free memory to install it.

Microsoft patent dispute bans Motorola Android devices in the US
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 22 May 2012, 12:27 am CEST
It doesn’t look good for Motorola devices running Android in the
US. The US ITC (International Trade Commission) has issued a
limited exclusion order, after determining that these devices
infringe on Microsoft-owned patents. The ruling bans the
importation of specific devices to the US.
The patent in question is the way Motorola’s devices create or schedule meeting requests. A way around this is by either removing the feature or reaching a licensing agreement with the software giant.
Although Motorola is yet to name the devices that infringed on Microsoft’s patent, the Redmond firm’s dispute initially called out Motorola devices for the US market and some that are also available in the UK. These include the Atrix, Backflip, Cliq, Defy, and Xoom. Motorola has 60 days to remove the feature or find another way around.
During the 60 days, Motorola will be fined $0.33 for all devices imported that infringe on the patent. The only person who can veto ITC’s decision is US President Obama.
What do you make of this latest patent dispute between Microsoft and Motorola? Give us your thoughts.
Nokia Lumia 900 survives nails hammered into it
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 21 May 2012, 10:53 pm CEST
Want to know how much abuse the Nokia Lumia 900
can take? Well, Nokia’s Failure Analysis Specialist put the handset
to the test by hammering nails into the smartphone’s display. The
Finnish firm’s high-end blower survived. A video proving the
handset’s toughness has been posted on YouTube.
How did the Lumia 900 survive this abuse? Like other handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X, Nokia’s Windows Phone handset comes with Corning Gorilla Glass protection on its display. This thin film of tough glass protects the phone’s display from scratches and the usual bumps. Now, Nokia has put the technology to the test by trying to drive nails in with a hammer.
Impressed the Nokia Lumia 900 with Corning Gorilla Glass survived nails driven into its display with a hammer? Give us your thoughts.
Apple-Samsung settlement talks commence
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 21 May 2012, 10:34 pm CEST
According to the BBC, settlement talks between Apple and Samsung
have started. This could potentially end the ongoing patent wars
between the two technology giants.
Apple claims that the maker of the highly popular Galaxy S2 and its successor the Galaxy S3 have copied the design of the iPhone and iPad. The result was legal battles between the two in various countries around the world. To help the two companies resolve their differences, a US judge has ordered the companies to sit down and talk.
Unlike the late Steve Jobs who vowed to wage “thermo-nuclear” war with Android, Apple current CEO, Tim Cook, said that he prefers to “settle”. Tim Cook will sit down and talk with Geesung Choi, Samsung’s digital media boss, and JK Shin, Samsung’s mobile division head.
Speaking to Reuters, Shin said, “There is still a big gap in the patent war with Apple, but we still have several negotiation options, including cross-licensing.”
Will Apple and Samsung resolve their differences, or will the patent wars rage on? Give us your thoughts.
Motorola warns Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 will make some phones worse
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 21 May 2012, 9:19 pm CEST
Maker of the RAZR
Maxx and Xoom,
Motorola, has admitted that the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
update will actually make some phones worse.
Motorola said, “We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done — well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.”
This may be disappointing news, but at least Motorola has owned up to the situation and has provided a page informing it customers on which phones get the Ice Cream Sandwich update and which phone do not. You can find out if your phone gets ICS or not here.
Ice Cream Sandwich is slowly finding its way to Android devices. Currently, it has found its way to 5% of devices running Google’s operating system. Sadly, at this rate, this means that ICS will not make it to devices even when the next version of Android, Android 5.0 (Jelly Bean) arrives.
Will your Motorola device get the Ice Cream Sandwich update? Let us know through a comment.

Upgrade Or Buy Samsung Galaxy S3 12 Month Contract Deals
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 21 May 2012, 8:37 pm CEST
I’m in that situation once again where my current 12 month contract deal has expired on my Samsung Galaxy S2 and I’m looking at upgrade deals to buy the new Samsung Galaxy S3, I’ve just logged into my Vodafone online account to what prices are to upgrade to the new Galaxy S3 ‘Super Phone’ and there are no options available below £46 per month if like me you prefer 12 month contracts and even then there’s a £149 upfront price for the phone on top of your monthly line rental!
If I buy a new Samsung Galaxy SIII contract deal with a new number at £36 per month I pay an £188 upfront price, working this out over the entire 12 month period equates to £620 which is £120 more than buying the phone SIM free with no inclusive minutes, text or data.
Of course I could just buy the Samsung Galaxy S3 SIM free at £499.99 and insert my existing SIM card but that is a serious chunk of money upfront and I see it as an almost interest free finance plan over 12 months with the added bonus of 300 minutes, unlimited SMS and 500MB of data to use every month.
If you consider that the cheapest 24 month contract deal offering the same amount of minutes, text and data costs £26 line rental with an upfront cost of the phone at £119.99 which equates to £743.99 the 12 month deal is not only cheaper overall but also means you can upgrade your phone again much sooner!
Another option I’ve also looked at is the Talk Mobile network which is the only other currently offering 12 month contract deals for the Samsung Galaxy S3, they offer the cheapest deal available at just £20 per month with a price for the phone of £419.99, this means the overall cost is actually £659.99 which is a full £84 cheaper than Vodafones’ deal (and on the same network as Talk Mobile are a virtual operator) and includes 200 minutes, 1000 SMS and a very handy 1GB of data!
Having never been with the ‘virtual’ network before I’m just not sure whether to take the leap or not, the price obviously says I should and the 100 less minutes are not a problem whereas the extra 500MB of data could well come in handy as I do like to watch a lot of YouTube videos and spend a lot of time browsing rather than making calls.
Think I’ll just have to let you know once I’ve made my decision, which would you go for?
PS: The new number issue ![]()
I change my existing tariff to the lowest line rental available and leave a voicemail message informing everone that calls of my new number, I then usually let this run for another 2 months before cancelling it in which time the most important people have all called and then have my number!
Samsung Galaxy S3 sports DC-HSPA – offers faster 3G internet speeds
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 21 May 2012, 8:25 pm CEST
Samsung has confirmed that their new flagship the Galaxy
S3 offers faster 3G internet speeds. It does this by connecting
to the internet via DC-HSPA, which is one step up from today’s
3G.
DC-HSPA on the Galaxy S2’s successor will allow you to surf, stream, and download at speeds of up to 42Mbps. This is the fastest dual-channel HSPA available in the UK. Of course, this all depends on where you are and if the signal in your area is strong enough.
So when will you get to enjoy the Galaxy S3’s DC-HSPA, which offers 42Mbps? Samsung’s next flagship will be arriving in the UK on the 30th of May, which is a little bit over a week away. You can pre-order the device or head over to your nearest retailer on the superphone’s release date.
Does DC-HSPA on the Samsung Galaxy S3 excite you? Are you excited to finally enjoy download speeds of up to 42Mbps? Give us your thoughts.

This is HTC’s fourth Android ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ release after the ‘One’ range gave us the HTC One X, One S and One V models, however this is by far the smallest and cheapest of them all and introduces the latest instalment of the Android OS to a whole new customer base, the new funky colour schemes further enhance the desirability of this pocket friendly smart phone to those that appreciate style and fashion on a budget.

Motorola to be fully acquired by Google next week – Android to remain open source
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 20 May 2012, 10:53 pm CEST
According to the Wall Street Journal, Google has now been given
the go signal to acquire Motorola. This is after Chinese regulators
as well as US and European antitrust regulators a few months back
have given the search giant the green light.
Google is expected to pay $12.5 billion (£7.9 billion) to acquire Motorola next week. There is one big condition the search giant had to agree to for the deal to push through. This is keeping Android open source for the next five years.
What does Google get out of acquiring the makers of the RAZR and Xoom? It will get its hands on over 17,000 patents, which it plans to use in creating its own hardware. This massive patent portfolio will also allow Android to defend itself against lawsuits filed against it by rivals such as Apple.
The acquisition was announced back in August of 2011. The deal will allow Android to be more competitive against the highly popular iPhone and iPad. Google’s Larry Page says that the deal will “supercharge the entire Android ecosystem”.
What do you make of Google being given the green light to fully acquire Motorola? Do you think it will do wonders making its own hardware; do you think it will be armed with more patents to defend itself against rivals such as Apple, or do you think it doesn’t really make any difference at all? Give us your thoughts.
Apple attempts to ban the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the US right before its scheduled peace talks with Samsung
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 20 May 2012, 10:07 pm CEST
According to Foss patents, Apple has filed for a sales ban of
the Galaxy
Tab 10.1 in the US just days before its scheduled peace talks
with Samsung.
This is not the first time Apple tried to ban the Korean tech giant’s tablet. It successfully enforced an injunction against the device in Germany. Samsung then redesigned its 10-inch tablet (Galaxy Tab 10.1N) for the German market, getting around the sales ban. Apple also tried to ban the sales of the same tablet in Australia, but Samsung successfully overturned the ruling.
If Apple successfully bans the tablet in the US, it would be another setback for the Korean firm’s tablet. It is also likely to affect the peace talks scheduled between the CEOs of both camps, wherein the two are trying to resolve their differences. Furthermore, if Apple does have the iPad 2’s rival banned from sale in the US, Samsung may redesign their 10-inch tablet just like they did in Germany.
The late Steve Jobs waged all-out war with Android, claiming Google has stolen their ideas. Now that Tim Cook is Apple’s head honcho, he says that he would rather settle than go through lawsuits. Despite saying this, the legal debacles still continue.

Retailers around the world place 9 million orders for the Samsung Galaxy S3
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 20 May 2012, 9:40 pm CEST

retailers in 145 countries have placed a total of 9 million orders
for the Samsung Galaxy

pre-ordered the superphone, which is scheduled to be released in
the end of the month.
The Korean Tech giant sold over 10 million units of the highly popular Galaxy S2 in the first few months after the smartphone’s release. It looks like the S3 will be breaking its predecessor’s record.
The Galaxy S3 is a monster of a smartphone. It sports a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. It packs a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor coupled with 1 GB of RAM under the hood. It runs the latest version of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich).
So when is Samsung’s new flagship hitting shops in the UK. The Galaxy S3 is will be landing in stores on the 30th of May for early birds who have pre-ordered the smartphone.

Man files lawsuit claiming Siri is ‘deceptive’ – Apple fights back
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 20 May 2012, 9:14 pm CEST
Back in March, a New York resident, Frank M Fazio, has filed a
lawsuit claiming Siri didn’t perform as well as apple advertised it
to be in TV ads.![]()
The initial complaint reads, “In the commercials, all of these tasks are done with ease with the assistance of the iPhone 4S‘s Siri feature, a represented functionality contrary to the actual operating results and performance of Siri.”
According to the WSJ’s law blog, Apple is fighting back with the Cupertino firm filing a motion to dismiss the complaint as well as other similar lawsuits. Apple says that the complaints “offer only general descriptions of Apple’s advertisements, incomplete summaries of Apple’s website materials, and vague descriptions of their alleged — and highly individualised — disappointment with Siri.”
Apple also says that if these people were truly disappointed with Siri, they should have returned the iPhone 4’s successor, which is under the company’s 30-day return policy. It adds that although Siri is “cutting-edge”, it is still in beta, which it stated in its October press conference and on apple’s official website.
Apple may be looking to dismiss the complaints, but it is in truth disappointing. It still can’t figure out British accents and still cannot provide local information in the UK.
Do you think Siri is a disappointment? Give us your thoughts.
Free Samsung Galaxy S3 Deals – W/E May 20th
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 20 May 2012, 4:23 pm CEST
As
the first week comes to a close after the release of Samsung Galaxy
S3 deals in the UK we take a look at the cheapest contracts
offering a free phone as more of the retailers release their prices
for this latest flagship Galaxy phone.
Still out ahead (but not by much) is the O2 contract deal at £29 per month which offers the Samsung Galaxy SIII free of charge, included in this tariff are 100 minutes of calls, unlimited SMS and 100MB of data, it’s worth noting that although this is the cheapest Galaxy S3 deal available with a free phone the 100MB of data allocation may not be enough for many average users.
Following close behind O2′s deal are Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile all offering this new Galaxy S3 phone free with contract deals at £31 line rental, here’s a quick run down of what’s included in these offers:
Vodafone

Vodafone 900 + Unlimited + 500MB at £31 – 900 minutes, unlimited SMS, 500MB data
There are actually 4 pay monthly tariffs available at £31 that provide a free Samsung Galaxy S3 but they all offer 500MB of inclusive data so this Vodafone deal is the best of them all with 900 minutes to use.
T-Mobile

T-Mobile 300 + Unlimited + 1.5GB at £31 – 300 minutes, unlimited SMS, 1.5GB data
T-Mobile 600 + Unlimited + 750MB at £31 – 600 minutes, unlimited SMS, 750MB data
T-Mobile 900 + Unlimited + 250MB at £31 – 900 minutes, unlimited SMS, 250MB data
T-Mobile have played things slightly different by letting you choose more minutes or more data for the same monthly rental price, an average user gets through just over 250MB of data each month so the middle 600 tariff may suit a lot of users, however those that don’t make this many calls but rather watch videos, download content and browse the net might want to look at the 300 deal with a very good 1.5GB of data whilst those that do a lot of talking with not so much online activity could opt for the 900 package.
Orange

Orange Panther 31 – 400 minutes, unlimited SMS, 750MB data
Orange Dolphin 31 – 600 minutes, unlimited SMS, 250MB data
Orange cater for both types of Galaxy S3 users by reducing the amount of minutes in favour of more data like the T-Mobile deals, (this would make sense as both networks are now owned under the same umbrella group; Everything Everywhere), this is a straight choice dependent on how much you talk compared with how much data you need.
Th other UK networks that have released Samsung Galaxy S3 contract deals are Three Mobile and Talk Mobile, the first is just £1 more expensive in their deals for a free phone whilst Talk Mobile (a virtual network running on Vodafone) doesn’t actually offer the phone free at this time.
Three
Mobile
Three 500 + 5000 + 250MB at £32 – 500 minutes, 5000 SMS, 250MB data
Considering that you can get more minutes and data for your money with the rival networks, Three Mobile are not quite there on price yet, however they do offer deals with unlimited inclusive data which may be attractive to heavy users.
We’re keeping a close eye on contract deals for the Samsung Galaxy SIII as they are released, as it stands these are all what are known as ‘pre-order’ offers that will be fulfilled on May 30th once UK stocks arrive.
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 Upgrades the Galaxy Ace and Ace Plus
Mobile Phones & Deals UK 20 May 2012, 1:21 pm CEST
The upgrade to the very popular Samsung Galaxy Ace and more recent Ace Plus models has now been launched on a second network, the Galaxy Ace 2 is the latest instalment in the range and further improves in the features department as well as offering a larger touch screen, speedier processor, more advanced imaging and more memory capacity.
First released on O2 contract deals the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 is now available on a selection of Orange contracts starting at £15.50 line rental, the good news is that a free phone is currently being offered on pay monthly tariffs from just £20.50 per month with 200 inclusive minutes of calls, unlimited texting and 100MB of data, for heavier users of data there is also a Galaxy Ace 2 deal at the same price with 500MB of data and 100 minutes of calls.
This new addition to the Ace series is a very compact and capable smart phone, the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 may not boast the quad-core chip or large touch screen of the new Samsung Galaxy S3, however it packs those all important Android features alongside a dual-core processor and is great value for money.
Running at 800MHz with a good 768MB of RAM this is no sluggish smart phone, the screen is a 3.8 inch TFT display and there’s a 5 mega pixel camera on the back of the phone recording video at 720p HD, by far the most advanced of the Samsung Galaxy Ace models the Ace 2 also has a front facing camera for video calling, Samsung’s ChatOn instant messaging service, a multimedia player and a host of pre-installed Samsung Apps for social networking, music and book lovers.
Fast connections are made via 3.5G data support and Wi-Fi whilst GPS takes care of journey planning with turn by turn navigation, there’s a good 4GB of internal memory which can be expanded via the micro expansion slot with cards up to 32GB so plenty of room to store downloaded applications, music, videos and photos.
Unlike the large touch screen models like the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note, the Ace 2 is a compact device ideal for pockets and bags, overall dimensions measure 118.3 x 62.3 x 10.5mm and it only weighs 118g, as with the previous Galaxy Ace Plus and original Ace model we expect there to be further colour schemes launched soon which will no doubt include a white model.

Nice and compact as Blackberry Curve phones always have been, the new 9320 offers a 2.44 inch TFT LCD display above its new, redesigned qwerty keyboard, on the back is a good 3.2 mega pixel camera, a new FM radio and the phone has Wi-Fi, 3.5G, Bluetooth and GPS connections, of course there’s also that comprehensive email support offered by all Blackberry phones and the much loved instant messaging service for those that like to chat with their friends.
The new OS7.1 software adds in even more integration for social networking even within the BBM application so that you can actually share your Facebook or Twitter status updates via instant message, there’s also voice activated search and access to Blackberry World where you’ll find hundreds of new apps to download plus there’s 512MB of on-board memeory with a slot will take up to 32GB MicroSD cards for storing all of those apps, music, pictures and videos.
For those looking for a more advanced smart phone with a better camera and faster processor we would recommend the Blackberry Bold 9900 or the slightly less expensive Blackberry Bold 9790 model, there’s been no official news as yet as to whether RIM will release further colour schemes for this new addition to the Curve series, but if previous models are anything to go by it’s more than likely we’ll see at least a white model coming soon.
